CROSS CURRICULAR - Literacy
Literacy: a tool not a task
Message from the Literacy Coordinator
Literacy is a crucial element of any school for both students and teachers alike. Without Literacy students are unable to access the curriculum and, ultimately, the exam papers they will be judged on. Literacy allows students to access meaning, to make meaning and express their ideas coherently; skills which the government and Macmillan feel are essential to anyone entering the world of work after leaving education.
In July 2006 I had the pleasure of becoming the Literacy Co-ordinator for Macmillan Academy and I will be working with teachers and students alike to develop resources and strategies to promote Literacy across the whole of the curriculum, for every student at Macmillan. Students will see these strategies in their registration periods, where they may find themselves playing ‘Just a Minute’ or ‘Boggle’, and in lessons, when they will have approaches for accessing texts and developing writing skills reinforced.
My teaching area is English and I am fortunate to teach KS3, KS4 and KS5, this will allow me to develop a range of strategies and approaches for all of our students. I am, however, also lucky to have studied Maths and Science A’Levels and as a result of this I feel I have an awareness of the Literacy needs of these subjects and I am looking forward to working with a variety of subject areas.
With the government focus on Literacy in the new format of GCSE exams from 2008 it is going to be an exciting time for Literacy within Macmillan and I anticipate many successful cross-curricular links being forged.
