Choosing the right course FOR YOU
A wide and varied range of Post-16 courses is available to you at Macmillan Academy.
If you need advice when making your choices, we will be there to give it. All you need to do is ask.
If you do not have the necessary GCSE passes at Grade C or above to qualify you for BTEC/AS courses, you may well want to spend Year 12 gaining an Intermediate General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ); this is the equivalent of 4 GCSE passes at Grade C or above and will provide you with a route to BTECs and A Levels or directly into worthwhile employment. In Year 13 your choices are from BTECs and Advanced (A2) Levels. AS Levels are also still an option. Listed on these pages are the subjects you can study at each level and a full description of the content of all the courses on offer.
What are 'A2' & 'AS' Courses?
You probably know that these are the much more flexible replacement courses for the old GCE Advanced Levels for which students used to study throughout Years 12 and 13.
Both AS and A2 in all subjects are modular; this means that throughout these courses you will be assessed by a series of tests.
When you have passed three modules in any subject, you will receive your AS qualification in that subject.
Passing three more modules will gain you your A2 qualification in it.
There are six grades which you can gain at AS and A2 Level.
Grades A to E are all passes while Grade U is not and is an abbreviation for 'Unclassified'.
The higher the grades you achieve, the more UCAS points you will gain and the better will be your chance be of finding a place at the university of your choice or with the organisation or company for which you would like to work.
