Post 16 | Support & Guidance
Whilst studying in Post 16 Education it is important that students feel they have access to the necessary support and guidance in order to fulfil their potential. Students who study at Macmillan Academy have access to a variety of staff that are always available to provide help and advice.
Support
Pastoral
All students will have a Personal Tutor who is often the first point of contact should a student need any help or support. Students will meet with their Personal Tutor on a daily basis during registration and will have a 1 hour tutorial every week. Students stay in the same tutor group whilst they study in Post 16 which allows Personal Tutors to build a strong working relationship with their tutees. Students in Year 12 and 13 will each have a Head of Year who is also there to provide support and guidance as well as the Head of Post 16 Education.
Education Maintenance Allowance
Students who continue their studies at Post 16 could be entitled to an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) to assist with the costs of attending the Academy. All students aged between the ages of 16-18 can apply for EMA which can give students up to £30 a week to support their learning. Application packs are available from the Post 16 office or by visiting www.direct.gov.uk/ema for more details.
Meals
Post 16 students may also be eligible for free meals depending on their family income. For more details on eligibility please contact the Post 16 office.
Transport
The Academy offers a transport service for Post 16 students to use. Students can purchase a bus pass to use the transport service or pay on a daily basis. Any Post 16 students who decide to become bus monitors are eligible for a free bus pass. The Academy also has application forms for half fare bus passes which students can use on public transport.
Guidance
Careers
Post 16 students have access to 1:1 careers advice. The Academy employs a full time Careers Advisor who meets with students and their parents to discuss career plans. Students also have access to the Careers Zone which is well stocked with university prospectuses and employment literature. This includes all major university prospectuses and the Macmillan Academy Good University guide. Students can make an appointment or drop into the Careers Zone to seek advice.
Connexions
The Academy also works closely with Connexions Middlesbrough. We have two Personal Advisers that visit the Academy on a weekly basis to help Post 16 students make informed choices about their future plans. For more details on the Connexions Service please visit www.connexions-direct.com
Aimhigher
The Academy is part of the Aimhigher initiative which aims to raise students’ aspirations. Through the initiative there is the opportunity to take part in several activities including university open days, residentials, master classes, Open University courses and 1:1 mentoring.
